We can do better as a society and to our fellow mankind. We’ve seen cruelty and hate engulf the country – and we’ve seen people take a stand to be better, do better and promote loving each other.

In 2001, President George W. Bush declared the first Human Rights Week – later becoming a monthlong, worldwide holiday. December is the perfect time to reflect on the way we treat others and to fight for equality. Do your part to embrace equality and ensure every person’s rights are being recognized!

Ways to Celebrate Universal Human Rights Months:

Volunteer

Amnesty International is an organization that fights for human rights and is always looking for volunteers. Try contacting them about ways you can volunteer – or find a local organization to participate in.

Give Back to Your Community

Spend time at local food shelters or other organizations nearby that you can help give back to your community. Bag lunches and bring them to the homeless. If time is an issue, make a financial contribution. Any way you can give back to your community, is helpful!

Read the Bill of Rights

Feeling ambitious or love poli-sci? Dive into the Bill of Rights and review what your rights are! The Bill of Rights outlines the basic human rights that the United States was built upon.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights holiday.  Throughout the month of December, there are many different celebrations throughout the many different cultures of the world. You can plan a personal celebration for you, and your family/friends, to celebrate our freedom and human rights – or look for a local event to celebrate with others.

Whatever you do to participate this year, remember to do better and be better!
