Historically, our brains were designed to use stress as a way to protect ourselves. Think back to caveman days… Caveman were likely in a constant state of danger from the environment around them or predator animals. The flight or fight responses were designed to protect the caveman from impending danger. But, what happens when the world around us has evolved to where we are today? Our brains are still designed to have the same responses.

In some scenarios stress can be a life-saving state of mind, like in the previous example of the caveman. Too much stress can cause the complete opposite effect. Too much stress can cause people to become sick. For example, stress can increase blood pressure, form heart disease complications, or allow people to become chronically ill.

According to the American Psychological Association, the 5 most common reasons people are stressed:

  1. Money
  2. Work
  3. Family
  4. Economic outlook
  5. Relationships
