Jim Rohn, motivational speaker, was noted for being a big proponent of the concept of the ‘the average of 5’. The concept says you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

The easiest example is to think about high school. Remember how the jocks hung out with the jocks, the bookworms with the bookworms and the band hung out with the band. Of course there was some crossovers, but each group had their unique identifying factors. For example, the ‘jocks’ would tend to spend time working out and hanging out outside of school.

Like minds tend to flock together. So, the law of the average of 5 encourages you to look at the 5 people closest to you. It doesn’t matter if they are friends or relatives. These 5 people will affect the way you think and the decisions you make. If your closest 5 people are studying hard – you’ll find it acceptable to spend more time studying. If they’re partying, you’re probably partying to. And the results of your decisions will determine your successes and failures.

Who are your closest 5? Do you need to make some changes in your social circle?
